Indian Head Massage
With its’ origins in Indian culture and embedded into daily family life the Indian Head Massage incorporates Ayurvedic Massage and includes work on the upper back, shoulders, neck, head, scalp and face.
With desk work being commonplace nowadays the upper body can be a store house for physical muscular tension from hours spent seated, staring at a screen plus the shoulders are attributed to holding emotional tension too, not to mention the mental strain of all that thinking – Indian Head Massage is a perfect solution!!
How can you benefit? The Massage helps to increasing flexibility and mobility in the joints, improving the blood and lymphatic flow, relaxes connective tissue, frees knots of muscular tension and aids the body to eliminate toxins and waste. It’s a great treatment for alleviating the negative effects of stress.
Whatever your reason for selecting an Indian Head Massage it is a great treatment for getting to those areas that are difficult to touch yourself! The variety of strokes from deep kneads, compressions to gentle tapping/ stroking can allow for either a deeply soothing and sedative style ( great to prepare you for sleep), something more energetic ( if you feel like you need uplifting!) or a combination of the two!
The aim of an Indian Head Massage is to encourage tension to be released that has accumulated in the muscle tissues, to soothe the nervous system and to calm the mind.
I offer several options;
– seated / lying down – you choose, it’s about what feels more comfortable for you.
– with oils – if you are receiving an oiled Indian Head Massage then the the upper back is exposed ( you are given a towel wrap to wear) and oil would be applied to the shoulders, neck and if you are comfortable with it to your scalp.
– over clothes – you will NOT have oils used – this is a great way to be able to have a Massage in the middle of your work day or when you don’t want to get messy!
The oils I use are traditional in Ayurvedic Massage treatments; coconut, sesame and there are more traditional Western oils available too. We can discuss this on the day. It may be possible to use a different facial oil to complement your skin type and for this I would offer you Neals Yard Organics.
Clients comments vary after their Indian Head Massage session it may be they feel deeply relaxed and calm or if they’ve chosen something more energising a feeling of more energy and being revitalised. Indian head massage is particularly good for reducing the effects of stress.

Contra-indications – to Indian Head Massage
Always make sure that you avoid alcohol for at least five hours before the treatment. Indian Head Massage should be avoided if you have had recent surgery, or a head or neck injury; a history of thrombosis or embolism; spondylitis or spondylosis. If you have high or low blood pressure, diabetes, any kind of heart condition, cancer or osteoporosis it is best to check with your medical adviser.
Contact Joe if any of this is relevant to you and she can advise you further in some instances it may be necessary to get your GP/ Consultant to confirm your Massage can go ahead before arranging a treatment. In such instances a Relax Session ( 1 to 1 or group) may be a suitable alternative.
